Prediction of earthquake is not possible. Do not list to or spread rumours.
Aftershocks are normally less intense and gradually die out.
The repairs being carried out on many buildings right now are temporary.
Long term strengthening or retrofitting must be done to avoid future failures.
The technology and the codes of practice for this exist in India.
WHAT TYPE OF REPAIRS ARE POSSIBLE :
TEMPORARY
- Additional props and thickening of columns are in most cases temporary measures, making the structure capable of carrying vertical loads, but they do not withstand horizontal forces of earthquakes.
PERMANENT
- A well planned permanent earthquake resistant design will be necessary.
- For this, the existing structure will have to be carefully studied.
- Each design will have to be specific for each building.
- Additional walls, corner strengthening, column and beam strengthening
as well as other measures may be required.
DO NOT STOP WITH TEMPORARY REPAIRS. GET THE LONG TERM EARTHQUAKE STRENGTHENING (RETROFITTING) DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
