ODI, when England beat the West Indies by just one wicket. It was West Indies' first ever ODI match. Cricket's greatest
all rounder Sir Gary Sobers failed to score in his only ODI match.
07-09-1973 West Indian Roy Fredrick's (105) became the only second batsman after Dennis Amiss to record a hundred in an
ODI.
13-07-1974 India appeared in its first ODI at Headingley, Leeds. They however lost the match by four wickets. Brijesh Patel (82) and captain Ajit Wadekar (67) were the top scorers.
15-07-1974 England v India at Kennington Oval, London was the first ODI to involve play on two successive days.
31-08-1974 Englishman David Lloyd (116 not out) became the first to bat through out an innings. Pakistani Majid Khan (109) by reaching his hundred in only 88 balls - recorded then the fastest ever hundred in
ODI. Also for the first time two hundreds were scored in an ODI match.
07-06-1975 The first ever World Cup (known as the Prudential Cup) began in England at four different venues.
07-06-1975 England (334-4 in 60 overs) against India became the first side to reach a 300-plus score in
ODI. England then recorded the largest margin of victory (by 202 runs). England all-rounder Chris Old (51 not out) recorded then the fastest ever fifty (in 30 balls).
07-06-1975 New Zealand captain and opener Glenn Turner (171 not out) against East Africa recorded then the highest ever individual score in an ODI match.
07-06-1975 Australian Dennis Lillee (5 for 34 in 12 overs) against Pakistan became the first to take five wickets in an ODI match.
07-06-1975 Sri Lanka (86 in 37.2 overs) against West Indies became the first team to be dismissed for less than 100 in an ODI match. The match played at Old Trafford, Manchester ended at 3:30 - then earliest finish to an ODI match.
11-06-1975 Curiously enough, India who conceded defeat by the largest margin against England, recorded ODI's first ever 10 wicket victory (against East Africa at
Headlingley, Leeds). India's left armer Bishen Singh Bedi had figures of 12-8-6-1. This is one of most
economical bowling analysis in ODI history.
11-06-1975 West Indian wicket-keeper Dereck Murray and number 11 batsman fast bowler Andy Roberts added 64 unbeaten runs to clinch an astonishing one - wicket victory with two balls to spare against Pakistan at
Edgbaston, Birmingham.
18-06-1975 Australian left arm fast medium bowler Gary Gilmour (6 for 14 in 12
overs) against England in the first semi-final of the World Cup at
Headingley, Leeds, became the first bowler to capture six wickets in an ODI match.
21-06-1975 West Indies became the first holders of the Prudential World Cup by beating Australia by 17 runs in the final. The match went on up to 8:42 pm in the evening. The match lasted for 8 hours and 42 minutes - the longest ever ODI match in terms to time. West Indian captain and man of the match Clive Lloyd (102) reached then the fastest ever hundred (in 82 balls) in an ODI match.
16-10-1976 The first ever ODI match on Pakistani soil (at Jinnah Park,
Sialkot) produced the first instance of a victory by one run. New Zealand were the victors.
16-03-1977 The Albion Sports Complex, Berbice at Guyana staged the first ever ODI match in the Caribbean.
