Ashok Ratansi Thakkar(Somaiya), has taken over as the President of Hindustan Chamber of Commerce on 30th September 2005 at its 59th Annual General Meeting and will be leading the Chamber in its Diamond Jubilee Year. He also heads the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association as its Commodore from September 24th, 2005. It is a proud moment for this Lohana family as he is the grandson of Late Shri Morarji Ranchoddass Sundrani who was among the first Lohana families to settle in Chennai. Ashok's grandfather was instrumental in the establishment of the Lohana Samaj Building at Chennai. His influence on this grandchild has contributed to the creation of a dynamic persona whose leadership traits have helped him steadily climb the ladder of public recognition.

He was nominated to the board of Chennai Port Trust as its Trustee since 1994 and continues to hold this post until date. He was first elected to the Council of Management of the Chamber during 1996 - 1997 . Soon this was followed by being voted in as Chairman of the Chambers Expert Committee on Shipping in the same year. Along with his Uncles, he is the promoter of STP Services Pvt Ltd GROUP leaders in Clearing and Forwarding of Import-Export related services. Through his energetic inputs he has managed to carved a name for himself and his enterprise in total logistic solutions catering to various needs of the shipping industry of the country.  

He is the Director of AL Logistics (P) Ltd, Haldia which is also the logistics provider for ITC Ltd and JK Corp Ltd. Ashok is also Chairman of Viking Shipping (Chennai) P Ltd and Partner of Viking Warehousing along with his elder Brother Yagnesh Ratansi Thakkar who is a Trustee of Lohana Seva Samaj and Vice President of Lohana Mitra Mandal. Ashok has also been designated as the Honarary Consul for Senegal for South India.

An enterprising person and a man who never says die, this businessperson apart from his industry interests is a water sports enthusiast who loves to scuba dive and has received his certificate of diving competence. His love for diving takes him to esoteric marine terrain from the Middle East to South East Asia. Apart from scuba diving Ashok loves to sail and he owns two Maxi 77s, ocean going Yachts of Swedish lineage, which he sails regularly when he is in his home Port.

This energetic man's wife is a dynamic medical professional herself. Nandita Thakkar is a doctor - her qualifications: BSc MD (OB &G), MRCOG and her area of special interest: Infertility. She carries on a family tradition of medical service working at Chennai in Mehta Hospitals Pvt Ltd a multi speciality hospital set up by her Grandfather Late DR Anantrai Jayantilal Mehta and her grandmother DR Savitha Ben A Mehta. She is also is a consultant and visiting doctor in Navloka Hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
